As trees come into their full leaf out now, we can see their flowers dropping, the pollen accumulating on our cars, and we get a sense as to their current health status.

Spring is one of the most brilliant times of the year. Pears with their white flowers line many urban streets, backyard dogwoods and cherries illuminate our neighbors yards, sap rises, pushing forth new bright green leaves.

Spring is also one of the costliest times in a trees life. As temperatures rise, roots release chemicals breaking down growth inhibiting auxin located in branch tips, the breakdown of auxin allows the buds to break. The energy it takes to produce new foliage that follows will drain a tree of it's stored reserves, it is in this crucial time that trees, especi

ally stressed trees, need to recoup this spent energy. In a sense it is a gamble, the tree must use energy to produce new foliage to gather more energy to grow roots, attract soil beneficial soil organisms and store nutrients for the next.

Some trees affected by salt water from Hurricane Sandy's surge and trees stressed by last summer's excessive heat waves are now showing signs of last years damage. Contact us if your trees are showing signs of early stress. Now is the time to treat for disease and pest issues as well. A review of your landscape now will give us an early jump to assisting it through 2013.

The Fall of 2012 will be remembered for the storm that shut the city down as Sandy made landfall just south of the New York City area on coastal New Jersey with sustained winds around 75 mph. Flooding neighborhoods, like ours in Red Hook, and damaging thousands of trees and coastal landscapes.

Rising Waters at Arborpolitan

Being one of the largest (in terms of area) storms ever to hit the eastern seaboard, stretching from the Carolinas to northern New England, and inland as far as Minnesota, the damage was both intense, hitting densely populated areas, and widespread with its massive reach.

As Arborpolitan Tree wound down our emergency work, we were reminded just how powerful the changing, warming environment is, and that most likely our industry will have to adapt to many changes as time goes by.

Arborpolitan tree removal of 30" plum in Carroll Gardens

For the short term though, we would like to offer some advice for homes that have experienced either mechanical damage to their trees from high winds and snow, or salt damage from tidal surges:

Salt Damage- Many coastal homes (Coney Island, Rockaways, Long Beach area, western Brooklyn, lower Manhattan) experienced a deluge of salt water into their gardens. Biologically, excess salt is not wanted by land plants, herbaceous or woody, and soils do not tolerate concentrations of salt. The hyper-tonic soils interfere with the absorption or passage of micro-nutrients by altering soil chemistry, cells of both plants and micro-organisms cannot function in high salt environs and end up crashing. The loss of cellular function of the plant and/or the beneficial organisms they depend on cause trees and gardens to wilt, turn brown, and fail. Our recommendations include soil testing, soil replacement, deep root liquid and granular soil amendments, and long term plans to manage and maintain gardens affected by salt damage.

Salt Damage: 1 Month After Flooding

Wind Damage- High winds, especially in nor’easter situations, exploit weak portions of trees, whether they be upper canopy branches that have internal decay, dead limbs, or down at the base where roots may have rotted, or the ground has been softened by precipitation. It can be difficult accurately predicting if a tree will fully or partially fail, especially in seemingly healthy trees. Many of the trees we worked on split internally, where wood had been weakened years ago and the damage compartmentalized into the tree. The best recommendation to homeowners is to have an arborist periodically visit your property to review the health of your tree. Work should only be done on a tree if needed. We now have technology which can read the inside of tree tissue to analyse the amount of weak and decayed tissue inside.

Buy Generic Viagra at low price

followed by torrential rains in May and a warm June we have seen an explosion of aphids and soft shelled scale, especially on Magnolias and Plums. This is all helped as well by a mild winter. Diseases seem to have been less aggressive than last year.

On the news front, Arborpolitan is beginning to test our compost teas at Soil Food Web of New York. We hope to get our truck or trucks on line with a compost tea rig this Fall. Photos to Follow.

Arborpolitan was also featured on The Late Show with David Letterman back in June for the small, but pleasant garden planted in one of the new Broadway islands near the bike lanes. It was dubbed “Letterman Park” and we got a nice shout out from David as well as the photo on their script for that night.

We are also planning our mid-summer visits to address the stress that the urban heat puts on a landscape. As soil temperatures exceed 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit roots tend to shut down their growth and slow their absorption of nutrients. A good dose of kelp to keep the roots thick and healthy will aid in getting them through the tough times. In New York City the urban heat island effect also works against us. As the sun goes down, buildings re-radiate their heat to the environment. Though planting trees in urban areas can decrease this problem they may suffer as the heat can prevent trees and shrubs from opening their stomates to exchange gases with the atmosphere as they are still trying to conserve water.

Arborpolitan has enjoyed the rollercoaster season thus far, starting with extraordinary high temps in March, a cooler April, wet May and early June, and now a heat wave, which is testing the grit of our landscapes. With the cooler part of the spring followed by torrential rains in May and a warm June we have seen an explosion of aphids and soft shelled scale, especially on Magnolias and Plums.

As of February 2012, Arborpolitan Tree and Garden Care is proud to announce its association and membership with the Northeast Organic Farmers Association. They are one of the oldest sustainable and organic organizations running in the United States with the goal of promoting ecological and just plain logical methods to naturally care for landscapes. We are happy to follow their lead and bring this type of philosophy to the New York City area.

Spring 2012

With hardly a winter to speak of, one can notice the buds beginning to swell on elms and maples, crocuses pushing up, witch hazel blooming, and other tell-tale signs that we are going to be experiencing an early Spring. This is important to note as plants, as well as insects and diseases, use the soil temperature and length of day to begin a new life stage. A wet summer last year, coupled with a mild winter this year can have an impact on tree health, insect populations, and prevalence of disease. It is important to refer to your landscape professional or your local university if you have any questions.

Here are a few tips going into Spring:

1) Reuse your winter clean up. Compost or mulch your small twigs, leaves, and dead greens if you have space. A good 3:1 ratio of brown (wood, leaves, cardboard) and greens (produce waste, dead herbaceous plants) can make a great compost down the road. (Note: if leaves were diseased, remove entirely from area to reduce spread this year, i.e. scab, rust, blight)

2) Make a garden care plan or look to consult with a landscape professional prior to the beginning of the growing season. Since most issues arise in April, May, and June, it’s best to be proactive when dealing with your garden. Don’t find yourself behind the eight ball with a landscape problem such as nutrient leached soil, aphids, or cedar apple rust.

3) Don’t let history repeat itself in your garden. If you notice the same thing happening every year, address the problem, not the symptom. Compacted or poor soil, moist pooling areas in the garden, densely packed foliage on ornamentals, and improper use of fertilizer can all be causing the same problem every year.

4) Understand that natural is good. Know your plants, their natural environments and pests. We live in a temperate zone with many varied ecosystems that can sustain different types of plants. Know which ones prefer sunny sandy areas, and which can take shade and standing water. This will help down the road in establishment.

5) Lastly, enjoy, we were spoiled with a nice winter, but it is always a welcome feeling when Spring approaches, there is no point in having a garden if one cannot enjoy what it brings, and addressing and correcting problems in a landscape is part of that enjoyment. So get your shovels out and gloves on…………
